Mermaids

an imaginary sea creature with the head and upper body of a beautiful woman and the tail of a fish

The mer-people might best possibly be described as a race of amphibious beings.  Mermaids are constantly getting themselves caught in fishermen's nets. Both genders are human from the waist up.  They have two large tail flukes at the end of their tails. Although they can turn their tails into to legs when out of the water the main difference between humans and mer-people is that they have no soul.

Mermaids are notorious for being strikingly beautiful as well as vain.  Almost always with long tresses ranging in color from blond to light brown to strawberry blond.  Eye colors vary, in different shades of greens and blues while their skin tone is always perfect; immaculately pearly white, with a silvery sheen when they are in contact with water.  On rare occasions mer-children will spend too much time at a young age out of water causing a light but permanent case of freckles to develop.

While mermen are known to be very muscular and seaworthy,  they are also known to be very gentle and kind.  But when they are provoked, and put in a position to protect themselves, or a land maiden whom they have found favor with they are not so mild.  Unlike the females, the males prefer short-to-medium length tresses. Depending on their station or status the older mermen will make five braids out of their beards and weave in ornaments or other small items as trophies.
